Student Success: Easing into Legalese

This article was originally published in the April 2012 edition of The Voice, CCO’s monthly e-newsletter.

When Salma Khokhar lost her job as a Lawyer’s assistant in 2010, she didn’t know what she was going to do.

“I had a little girl and no job, but enough legal knowledge not to throw it away,” she said.

One day, while riding a streetcar through downtown Toronto, she saw an ad for Herzing College in the local newspaper and decided to give them a call. Khokhar set up an appointment to tour the college the next day. After completing and passing an entrance exam, she was faced with a dilemma.

Khokhar’s disappointment was short lived. College staff offered to guide her through the OSAP loan process and before she knew it, she was on her way to getting her diploma.

Near the end of her program, she was required to complete 80 hours of internship. But before she could do that, she was offered a job in her field through the careers department.

With three months left of the program to complete and now balancing a full time job and family life, Herzing assisted Khokhar by changing her class schedule to accommodate her.

The now twenty-five year old says attending Herzing was the best choice she made and is grateful for their understanding of her situation.

“I never thought I was ever going to be able to go back to school, being a single mom, but it changed my perspective, it changed my entire life,” she said. Khokhar graduated from Herzing in November, 2011 with newfound confidence and belief in her abilities.

In less than a year, she had started her career, obtained a diploma and she is now pursuing her dream working as a law clerk at Waisberg & Associates in Yorkville.
