CCO Awards 2016: Outstanding Graduate in Services

Recipient: Lionel Martins, triOS College Business Technology Healthcare.
At the age of 27, Lionel held a fulfilling position as the Lead Hand at Aveineda Carpentry when the accident happened. In a single day, Lionel’s career in carpentry came to an end. Lionel lost three of his fingers to a saw as he was cutting a piece of solid oak. He spent the next year in and out of rehabilitation and fought through the lingering effects of the accident: depression, ptsd and anxiety.
When Lionel enrolled in the Police Foundations program at triOS College, he was hesitant to retrain. Following the accident, Lionel suffered from low self-esteem and became anti-social, wrote triOS College Mississauga Campus Director, Uzma Bhatti. However, Lionel soon became comfortable in the college setting, which allowed him to excel.
“Lionel rehabilitated his inner self, and it was such a pleasure for myself and other staff to see him emerge out of his shell,” Bhatti noted.
With his newfound confidence, Lionel turned the positive energy of the college toward the community. Lionel became a Student Ambassador for the campus and volunteered for various events, including the Pan-Am Games.
Prior to graduating in 2015, Lionel obtained a full-time position as a Screening Officer with ASP Incorporated. Lionel graduated from triOS’ Police Foundations program with honours and has since been promoted to Access Control Officer.
